The story: I bought this camera last year to upgrade my blog. Needless to say, not much blogging went on in 2019. I went on hiatus to sort out my life and no shame in that! That being said, it’s 2020 and I aim to re-enter the blogosphere. This beauty – the Olympus PEN EPL-9 – is what I shall be talking about in this post.
Note: At the moment, I know essentially next to nothing about cameras and am still learning, so my review is based off of what works best (or not so best) for me. Apologies in advance to anyone more knowledgeable than me about photography and technical specs! I will try my best, so here goes.
Many reviews state this camera to be best for newbie photographers just switching from their smartphones to a higher-end camera. Being so small (and also extraordinarily photogenic), the EPL-9 is quintessential for aspiring fashion, beauty, and lifestyle bloggers/vloggers such as myself.
This camera boasts:
- 180° flip LCD touch screen
- Interchangeable lenses
- Built-in WiFi/Bluetooth functionality
- Art filters
- 4K video capture
- A built-in flash
The huge 3-inch touch screen is a wonderful feature for vlogging and taking selfies. The flip side (no pun intended) is that the camera cannot be mounted on a tripod with the screen flipped downwards. Additionally, the screen is prone to scratches since it cannot be flipped inwards and is left exposed. However, I solved that particular issue by using a screen protector.
Being a mirrorless compact system camera, the EPL-9 allows for interchangeable lenses. With many lenses available on the market for various kinds of photography, it’s beneficial to have the option of switching out camera lenses to change up photography styles. The 14-42mm lens kit the camera arrives with is practical for general photography as it works well for macro shots and wide-angle. I still have to discover my optimal color settings but in the meantime, here are some photos shot with said lens (edited in VSCO, Photoshop CC, and Lightroom CC):
The feature that most excites me most is the built-in WiFi! Now all the files from my camera can be transferred onto my phone without having to export everything from a memory card onto my laptop first. Eliminating that step makes it so much simpler to post on social media!
As for the rest of the features, I haven’t played around with them yet but I’m sure they will be useful. The art filters strike me as interesting. They will provide an entertaining way to experiment with my vlogging style – kind of like having Instagram filters in an actual camera. TVs and laptops are just beginning to transition into 4K (and even 5K), so I’m sure most technology will catch on very quickly. Thus, 4K video capture will prove invaluable soon enough. For being such a tiny camera, the fact that it has built-in pop-up flash is nothing short of miraculous to me haha. I don’t typically use flash in my photos as I prefer natural lighting a.k.a. sunlight, but still. Technology never ceases to amaze me.
Overall, I am pleased with this camera. If you are in the market for a beautiful and functional camera, definitely check out the EPL-9! You can find it: here.
With that, I conclude my review of the Olympus PEN EPL-9. I’m excited to bring you all new content with the help of this camera, and I hope you are too!
Thank you for reading and until next time!
